Wine Investment

# Wine Investment, Explained Clearly

Investment-grade wine is produced in limited quantities, traded globally and held by private buyers, restaurants, merchants and auction houses. We help you understand how this market works.

Wine investment is the process of buying carefully selected, investment-grade wines with the intention of holding them over time and selling them later through the secondary market.

For many people, this is a new concept. Wine is often thought of as something to drink, gift or enjoy at dinner. Fine wine, however, sits in a different category. The most desirable bottles are produced in limited quantities and sought after across the world. At Berkshire Vintners, we help clients understand how this market works and how to build a collection with discipline.

The Fundamentals

## What Makes a Wine Investment Grade?

---

Not every expensive bottle is investment grade. Investment-grade wine usually shares several characteristics:

- **A respected producer** A recognised region, appellation and estate reputation.
- **A strong vintage** Positive critic scores and proven ageing potential.
- **Limited production** Scarcity that supports long-term demand.
- **Clear provenance** A professional storage history and documented condition.
- **International demand** An active resale market across the globe.
- **The ability to age well** Wines built to develop and improve over time.

Supply & Demand

## Why Fine Wine Can Appreciate

---

When a leading producer releases a vintage, the production is fixed — no more of that exact wine can be made. Over time, bottles are opened and consumed, reducing available supply. If demand holds or grows, the remaining bottles may become more valuable. Scarcity is particularly powerful in regions such as Burgundy, where the Burgundy 100 rose nearly 106% in the ten years to the end of 2025 (Decanter, Knight Frank data).

Market Performance Examples

## A Market with a Track Record

---

01

### Liv-ex Fine Wine 100

The industry benchmark of 100 sought-after wines. Decanter reported the Liv-ex 100 rose 34.1% in the ten years to the end of 2025.

02

### Burgundy

One of the strongest long-term performers. The Burgundy 100 rose nearly 106% over the same ten-year period, reflecting very limited production and global demand.

03

### Italy

Increasingly important globally. Liv-ex data shows the Italy 100 recorded a five-year gain of 5.6%, tracking leading Super Tuscans and Piedmont wines.

04

### Rare Bottles at Auction

A methuselah of Romanée-Conti 2000 sold for $404,600 (Decanter), underlining the value of rarity, provenance and format.

The Detail

## What Drives Wine Prices?

---

- **Producer Reputation** Estates such as Lafite, Margaux, Petrus and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are known far beyond their regions.
- **Vintage Quality** A strong year from a leading producer can become highly sought after.
- **Scarcity** Small production runs, old vines, grand cru parcels and large formats support demand.
- **Critic Scores** Respected critics increase visibility and help confirm quality.
- **Provenance** Clear history, original packaging and professional storage add desirability.
- **Brand Strength** Heritage, distribution and established buyer demand underpin the strongest names.
